The race for oil and new sources of natural gas will heat up in coming years as the world consumes more energy. This means that the companies building drilling equipment should enjoy sustained demand for their services, an analyst at Citi, said Monday.

Analyst Timothy Thein said companies such as Caterpillar Inc. and Cummins Inc. are most likely to benefit from a boom in oil exploration and production. Increased investment by the oil industry is "likely to be felt in some way" by other motorists as well, Thein said.

Caterpillar Inc. and Bucyrus International, Inc. announced today they have reached an agreement whereby Caterpillar will acquire Bucyrus International in a transaction valued at approximately $ 8.6 billion (including net debt).The acquisition was based on Caterpillar key strategic imperative to extend its leadership in the industry of mining equipment, Caterpillar and positions to capitalize on good long term prospects for the products driven by the trend of rapid growth in markets emerging that are improving the infrastructure, rapid urban development and industrialization of their economies.

Under the terms of the transaction, which was approved by the boards of directors of both companies, shareholders will receive 92 Bucyrus per share, 7.6 billion dollars into the set of all species.The transaction represents an implied premium of 32 percent over the shares of Bucyrus as November 12, 2010. Caterpillar will fund the acquisition through a combination of cash balance, debt and up to $ 2 billion in equity. The transaction is expected to close in mid-2011.
