Patches of goldenrod can be found in open fields or along the road. A special place that gives a lot of activity caterpillar and butterfly each year is Saugatuck in Redding, CT and Tarrywile Park in Danbury, CT. These places are easily accessible for family outings with easy hiking trails.

Milkweed is another plant that often grows in open fields. During the fall, it is recognized by its large seed pod-like enclosures, now bursting with large open like dandelion seeds. A favorite food of the famous monarch caterpillars in the summer, milkweed leaves are now milkweed tussock moth caterpillar.They have long hair-like structures called setae that cover their bodies with bright orange, white and black colors.

If you plan to take your kids for a walk in autumn, these caterpillars are easy to find and provide an incentive for many young naturalists at the meeting. All the tracks have a degree of camouflage, but the identification of their location and host plants are more than half the challenge. Once discovered, they do not run away, making them a perfect specimen for children to observe and learn.
