The finding explains a phenomenon scientists have wondered about for decades.
Normally, the gypsy moth caterpillars feed on tree leaves at night when predators, especially birds and squirrels can not see them. Then during the day, tracks down and hide in the bark of trees or even under the leaves on the ground.
But the caterpillars leave this sensible strategy when they are infected with a baculovirus, said Kelli Hoover, an entomologist at Pennsylvania State University and lead author of the paper.
"As they get sick, they climb to high positions and stay there and die," she said.What happens next is pretty horrible. "The inside of the track is fairly well converted to millions and millions of viral particles. And then there are other enzymes that cause the exoskeleton to melt. And that liquefies the track, then it can rain on the virus the leaves below.
Published an interview with Jim Owens recently retired president of Caterpillar. The interview highlights how Caterpillar embraced strategic agility through the financial crisis, and become an even stronger company.
Owens examines the procedures used in developing the strategy of Caterpillar: "As regards the economic side of it all here at Caterpillar, we believe that the scenarios. And so we sort of set these levels trend, if you want, then the high-low that we have to deal."
He commented on the cognitive biases that affect human decision making, and emphasizing how the process of fighting against them is of vital importance.
