Helping monarch butterflies along their way

When Sam McFarland was a little boy, his mother, Kristy, planted a butterfly garden, where she showed him the phases of the egg, caterpillar, cocoon and the final result.

Now that Sam is 16, Kristy is the one that plays out. This week, the garden was a game look-and-find.

"This is our first stop caterpillar," Kristy told me that we came to a stand-off chewed fennel and butterfly weed. Her keen eye found creatures of all sizes and stages of the metamorphosis of a butterfly.

There were identified tiny eggs. Tiny caterpillars and caterpillars munching and large, about to caterpillars cocoon.There were empty chrysalis. And there was finally emerged, the butterflies free, fluttering everywhere.

"They found me this year," said Kristy happily. "This year I just had an explosion of caterpillars.
