Midlander raises monarchs from eggs, and sets them free

If you see a monarch butterfly fluttering, he may owe his life to Mary Wylie Midlander.

Wylie, 84, is one of several people who Midlanders each summer research for the Monarch eggs on the underside of milkweed plants, remove leaves and bring to a safe place where they hatch into caterpillars, become pupae and then emerge as butterflies.

If the eggs were left on the plant, chances are an ant or a spider who was passing by would nibble on them for food.

It was the third monarch tends Wylie.She deliberately planted milkweed, the monarch who depends for his survival in his garden several years ago. Milkweed is the only plant that monarch caterpillars eat so that's where mama Monarch lays her eggs.
