I am always looking for ways to turn my garden into a family project. My partner is content as long as I'm fresh herbs to cook with him. My son is ready to look up from his work long enough Lego to enjoy a small inheritance r cucumber or a carrot from home. But I wanted something that would really engage the entire family.
Enter the caterpillars.
You can buy a kit to raise butterflies in your backyard, or you can do it yourself with easy to find materials. Mt Airy homeschool parent Lisa Marchiano taught me how to do it.
Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on milkweed. The bright flowers attract hummingbirds, butterflies and other insects. You can grow milkweed from seed, but my plants came from a pair of tropical milkweed plants Marchiano gave me last year.

Puss caterpillars feed on a variety of broadleaf trees and shrubs, and are most often found on oaks and citrus. This is a pale green caterpillar with yellow and red stripes. It often exceeds two inches in length and is fairly stout-bodied.
