In-wheel motors could reshape cars

The white Vauxhall Vivaro van, its diesel engine roaring, moaning a stop at a red light suburban Detroit.

Tom Prucha, Director of Electrical Engineering protean, is behind the wheel. Protean in the wheels makes electric motors and it leads Vivaro engines in both rear wheels.

Fire, Prucha presses a button on the dashboard. The diesel engine is quiet. When the light turns green, Vivaro, now powered solely by electric motors in the wheels, accelerates quickly and smoothly, like a sports car than a commercial van.

Although in-wheel motors are not revolutionary - Ferdinand Porsche unveiled a vehicle with them at the Universal Exhibition of 1900 in Paris - they have the potential to change the way vehicles are powered and designed.
