School bus pollution controls are hailed

The program to upgrade school buses with funding from the State Department of Transportation and the federal government. It was offered to school systems and bus companies on a voluntary basis, said a spokesman for the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, Edmund Coletta Jr.

The program is responsible for reducing emissions of harmful air pollutants by more than 27 tons per year, the DEP says on its website.

The authorities have planned to mark the completion of the program in Boston today at a ceremony attended by Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Richard Sullivan, Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Kenneth Kimmell, Revere Mayor Thomas Ambrosino , public schools of the city superintendent, Paul Dakin, and others.

Breathing high concentrations of diesel emissions can cause headaches, wheezing and dizziness. But studies have also found the contaminants can cause greater damage. Studies by the Environmental Protection Agency and other groups previously associated with the emissions to asthma and lung cancer.
