WASHINGTON - BMW X5 2120 2009 reminding 35DS xDrive equipped diesel engine because the fuel filter heater could overheat, possibly leading to a fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"The heating of the fuel filter, which is used to heat the diesel fuel during operation of the vehicle at low temperatures outside, could experience a power surge and becomes permanently activated," said NHTSA in its recall summary the problem. "Heating fuel filter could remain activated even when the ignition is switched off and lead to a dead battery.The unit could also overheat, possibly leading to a fire vehicle. "

In another document filed with the federal government, BMW said it had received 25 reports related to the anomaly.
