Suzuki seeks to buy back shares as Volkswagen partnership is called off

While the cracks had formed in their relationship for some time, the latest release seems to have been relieved of that VW Suzuki violated their contract by deciding in June to buy diesel engines from Fiat SpA of Italy. Volkswagen, which is widely perceived as a leader in diesel technology, said Sunday that he would give Suzuki "several weeks to address the issue."

Mr. Suzuki said yesterday he thought Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn understood that Suzuki had to use a Fiat.6l diesel engines because it would be difficult to install VW engines in some cars because of engine design of the German manufacturer. The president of Suzuki said he explained the situation at a meeting in late January with Mr. Winterkorn and sent an official document several days later. Suzuki said its agreement with Fiat has not violated the pact of VW.
