UA mining lab gets a giant drill

An engineering student starts the diesel engine and a 40-foot jumbo drill roared to life.

The newest addition to the University of Arizona San Xavier Mining Laboratory underground room is the largest and most modern engineering equipment there.

Steve Holmes, general manager Ray for copper and silver mine in Kearny, worked with his company, Asarco, to donate the room Aug. 11. Holmes is a graduate of the Department of UC, mining and geological engineering.

"What it does for us is to mine our laboratory and put it in a more modern era," said Ros Hill, Director of the San Xavier Mine.

Before, students practice drilling with portable equipment rather than full-size equipment.

"We want to start drilling so we can make a hole large enough so that students can go into the mine rubber tire vehicles," said Hill. Now, students have to go down ladders to enter the mine.
