Many U.S. truckers have closed their businesses by April 1, 2008 because they were not able to fight against rising diesel prices. The pilots claimed that they suffered a huge loss in their business. The cost of a large platform exceed 0000 without additional expense to maintain the vehicle. Thus, small trucking companies are closing because they are not able to contend with higher operating costs today.
In a report issued by the Avondale Partners, LLC, it was said that the number of trucking companies ceased operations in the first quarter of this year. This report indicates that the estimated 42,000 trucks, which is 2.1 percent of heavy trucks in this nation-the-road, went bankrupt during the first three months of 2008. Some trucking companies pay their drivers a fuel surcharge to help with the cost of fuel, but fuel surcharges are not paid enough to cope with fuel costs rising steadily. In April 2008, 24.3 cents a gallon in federal taxes are levied on gasoline to diesel.Some shippers refuse to pay a fuel surcharge or, in the case of some brokers, it collects but failing to transmit to society.
