A plan to build a Lowe's store 137,000 square feet of home improvement, plus a garden center on the site of a dump on Route 46 west in Montville was discarded, the company said.
A planner Lowe e-mail of the city last month saying the company was backing plans to build, Mayor Jim Sandham said.
Sandham said the e-mail from Lowe did not give a clear reason for the shift. He said officials Montville would be to see if something can be done to save the project.
A spokeswoman for Lowe said Friday that the project is stopped.
"Lowe has decided not to proceed with the development of stores in this city," Stacey C. Lentz said Friday.
Rene Avila, owner of the property to Route 46 and Old Bloomfield Avenue, the site of GI Auto Salvage Co., said he still plans to clean up and put tenants at the property.
