Pitts: Sanford business across from Lowe's struggles to recover

The opening of the Lowe's home improvement again five months after the tornado destroyed the old store is an inspiration to people in Sanford, and for us all.

I witnessed first hand the rapid construction of the new store on Horner Boulevard, U.S. 421 also, because I drive by there a couple times a week.

But I feel a little sore for the next Lowe almost directly on the street - the Umami Sushi and Asian Bistro, which is still shuttered.

Before the tornado, I had made plans to eventually visit the little sushi bar, but the time never came.The storm ripped off part of the bright orange roof and caused $ 100 000 damage in just one year after the restaurant opened.

I recently read that the chief, Roger Pelayo, is out of business for good here. A New York firm has the property and does not rebuild.
